Raktmokshan ( Blood Letting )

Raktamokshana (रक्तमोक्षण) is one of the five purification therapies (Panchakarma) in Ayurveda, specifically used for bloodletting or detoxifying the blood. It helps remove toxins from the bloodstream and is beneficial for conditions caused by impure blood (Rakta Dushti), such as skin diseases, inflammatory conditions, and certain types of headaches.

Types of Raktamokshan:

  • Shringa (Horn Method): Suction using cow horns to extract impure blood.
  • Alabu (Bottle Gourd Method): Similar to cupping therapy, using a heated bottle gourd shell.
  • Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy): Medicinal leeches are used to suck impure blood, especially for Pitta-related disorders.
  • Siravedha (Venesection/Needle Puncture): Direct removal of blood using a sterile needle or blade.

Mode of Action:

Raktamokshana works by removing vitiated blood (Dushta Rakta) to balance Pitta and Vata Dosha, detoxify the body, and improve circulation. It helps clear microchannels (Srotoshodhana), reducing inflammation, pain, and stagnation of impure blood.

  • Detoxification: Removes vitiated blood (Dushta Rakta), balancing Pitta and Vata doshas.
  •  Microcirculation Boost: Enhances blood flow, reducing clots and congestion.
  • Anti-Inflammatory & Analgesic: Reduces swelling, pain, and and cytokine-mediated inflammation.
  • Immunomodulation: Helps in autoimmune diseases like psoriasis and arthritis.

Indications:

  •  Purifies blood and removes toxins
  • Skin diseases (e.g., eczema, psoriasis, acne)
  • Arthritis, gout
  • Varicose veins and circulatory disorders
  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Localized congestion
